Rolling stock

Tram exploitation started in 1879 with horse trams of similar types to the ones used in most other Dutch cities. Since 1880 also steam locomotives were used. The first electric trams were introduced in 1905 At the beginning of 1907 the urban network and the steam tramline to Schiedam were electrified. On the lines to Overschie and Hillegersberg horses kept on hauling the trams until the early 1920's. The line to Hillegersberg was electrified and the one to Overschie, after a short period of using petrol engined trams, was replaced by a busline.

The old electric stock had two axles but after taken over by the municipality a large number of 4-axle trams was acquired. They stiil used a roving conductor and had a central entrance/exit. Also the first new trams bought after WWII had this layout. In the mid 1950's modern stock came into service with passenger flow and a seated conductor. Part of these trams were articulated. In the 1960's more articulated trams came into service, which together with the opening of the first metro line caused the disappearance of most trams having roving conductors. Only a small number was used for about 15 years more during peak hours.

In the early 1980's new articulated trams of an own RET design replaced most trams of the older types. The first decade of the 21st century saw the introduction of low-floor trams of the Alstom Citadis type.
